What is mental health?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Being emotionally healthy can promote productivity and effectiveness in work, school, or caregiving. It also plays an important part in the health of your relationships and allows you to adapt to changes in your life and cope with adversity.

Mental health is essential to living a balanced life. According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five Americans experiences mental health issues, translating to more than 40 million adults a year. It’s important to remember that mental health is health -- it is just as important as our physical health.
